Here are a few little known facts about cake cutting:
– historically, the cake cutting was done by the bride alone to signify the loss of her virginity; today however it is looked upon as the first act done together as husband and wife
– while wedding cakes can be any colour today, in the past wedding cakes were white which symbolized purity (refer to previous point). In Victorian times, white icing was also a symbol of money and social importance so white cakes were very desirable. The fine white sugar needed to create the white icing was very expensive, so the lighter the icing the wealthier the family would appear
– having several layers of cake or “cake stacking” represented fertility, couples would stack as many layers as they could to show how many children they would have. Today the stacks represent style, the higher they go the more fabulous the wedding
